Cosas que he aprendido de gente interesante

Philosophy, politics and religion · Ediciones Deusto, 2025

This book reclaims the legacy of Western civilization and seeks to rescue it from the nihilism that grips us. Short chapters running from the emotivism that now pervades everything to the lukewarmness of the center-right, from empathy as an alibi to the impoverishment of the religious message: the history of thought put to work on some of the thorniest arguments of our time. Published in Spanish.

From the motto “dare to know,” in Horace and Kant, to the ten ills that threaten that endeavour today: emotivism, anti-intellectualism, pseudosciences, conspiracy thinking, disinformation, post-truth, bigotry, infantilism, unwarranted pessimism and general stupidization. Plus a proposal for dealing with them.

Un ensayo de introducción a la hermenéutica de manos de Wittgenstein y Sherlock Holmes · Con prólogo de Mario Perniola · Ediciones Ápeiron, 2017

Why do we say that the exception proves the rule, when it seems it ought to refute it? Starting from that simple question, already found in Cicero and Leibniz, the book puts forward the idea that, to understand our own time, we must look at how Marx, Nietzsche and Freud attacked nothing less than the distinction between rules and exceptions. The book closes with a proposal for getting out of this predicament, and with that goal in mind turns to Wittgenstein, to hermeneutic philosophy and to a more reasonable detective than Sherlock Holmes: Chesterton’s Father Brown.

How do some human beings manage to impose rules on others, and to make them work? The problem of normativity, approached through the later Wittgenstein (the one who wrote after 1929) and the ethical and political consequences that follow, in dialogue with Gianni Vattimo’s hermeneutic nihilism. This is my doctoral thesis, turned into a book.
