Who is writing this

I took my doctorate in philosophy at the university of my own home town, Salamanca. Since 2021 I have run the academic section of ISSEP (Instituto Superior de Sociología, Economía y Política) in Madrid. As a philosopher I have spent decades circling a handful of awkward questions: what it means to interpret a rule, how we might organize ourselves in politics or religion, and why we find it so hard to agree about what is right and wrong. I have gone from university departments to television screens and newspapers, though I am still turning over much the same questions.

Career

How I got here

Abroad

During my studies I spent a year at the University of Rome (Tor Vergata) and another year at the University of Vienna, along with shorter stays in Brussels, Turin, Bogotá and Santiago del Estero. After completing my doctorate I worked for two years as a researcher under the supervision of the postmodern philosopher Gianni Vattimo, of the University of Turin, who had the patience to put up with my notions. I was also a Lonergan Post-Doctoral Fellow at Boston College, and enjoyed further stays at universities in New York (SUNY), Rome (LUISS) and Malta.

In Spain

I was a tenured professor for fifteen years at the Universidad Europea Miguel de Cervantes in Valladolid, where I headed its Department of Humanities between 2017 and 2021. I also served as an adjunct professor at the Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca (2004-06). I co-founded the Spanish Association for Ethics and Political Philosophy in 1996 and sat on its board (2013-2014).

Literary prizes

I was awarded the 1993 Letras Jóvenes Prize of Castilla y León, and was also among the winners of the first RENFE Haiku Competition (2006).

At present

Since 2021 I have directed the academic section at ISSEP in Madrid, which is where I mainly teach. Since that same year I have also worked with the Fundación Disenso, on whose International Advisory Board I sit.

In the media

I have written a fortnightly column in The Objective since 2016, and I also publish in outlets such as El Césped es Verde, La Gaceta de la Iberosfera and Die Tagespost. I discuss current affairs on channels including El Toro TV, Castilla y León Televisión and ViOne Media. I do not regard this as a distraction from my other occupations. A philosophy read only by philosophers has given up half its trade.
